Recent Work by Amy Newell

On View: April 12, 2018 - May 6, 2018

Opening Reception: April 14, 6-9pm

Amy Newell’s recent body of work is a combination of letterpress printing and collage. The series Vestige juxtaposes ghostly silhouettes in graphite and silverpoint with fragments of letterforms and mechanical parts in a shallow picture plane. Fruit Cocktail is an ongoing series of miniature abstract prints based on the artist’s collection of European produce stickers. Subtle colors float across the picture plane, occasionally interrupted by minute vivid marks in sharp focus. While traveling without her art supplies, Newell created Circular, a series of collages all cut from the same periodical. With only her x-acto knife and a glue stick, the artist reduced the advertisements to color, shape and pattern, reinterpreting and reassembling the parts.

Amy Newell received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1993 and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. She is an active printmaker and collage artist who currently lives and works in New Orleans, Louisiana. Newell is the founder of Rigamarole Press, a letterpress and etching studio located in Arabi, Louisiana. Her work consists of etching, relief, letterpress and collage, often mixing several media in each piece. Amy has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally. Her work is included in permanent collections such as United Therapeutic, Washington, D.C.; The University of Dallas, Dallas, TX; Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA; Johnson State College, Johnson, VT; Madison Children’s Museum, Madison, WI and Golda Meir Library, UW-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI.
